Odd that it works fine with the splitter in line, but if it freezes again I bet you will find that the split going out to your monitors will freeze and the split going to your your test TV screen will continue to play. I think once it hits those HDMI to cat5 extenders is when it goes bad. I don't think the output on the iMac is bad. This may just be a coincidence, I find it very hard to believe that running the HDMI through a splitter would fix the problem, but it appears to have at least stabilized it for the time being. So there's another test Friday night during Celebrate Recovery's 2 hours of use. OK all that being said, I put the splitter in yesterday and it ran fine for 2 hours, well it ran fine tonight for 3 1/2 hours of inputting new songs and running them during practice. I have ATI Radeon video cards, one is HD 5150 with 1024 mb and the other is 4850 with 512 mb (that's the main one). So does the Mac have a dual video card with one chip for the monitor and one for the monitor out? Why doesn't the monitor freeze when the display out freezes? And the HDMI out is via mini display > HDMI > converters.Īs far as the HDMI cables or converters going bad, once again why would that cause to video card to freeze? And I'm still using them with the splitter. Scott- PP sells a USB to DVI/VGA/HDMI External Video Adapter that has it's own video card in it, so I believe that's why the stage monitor still works, it doesn't use the Mac's video card. I'm running OS version 10.7.5 on both computers, not sure about the updates though.Ĭhad- what did you do to fix the problem, or are you still experiencing it? Again, video card issue? Is there an event log a tech could look at and diagnose it?

It does sound like a video card issue to me, but I do not know how to diagnose it, and if it is why does the splitter seemingly make it stop? Restarting Finder does nothing, Force Quitting and/or closing PP does not clear the frozen image from the output, only rebooting/restarting the computer clears the frozen output image. We had not used that computer for PP in about a year, but had recently updated to PP 5 from 4 just in case. Then the control room computer froze too. In fact when it froze 30 minutes before the first of 3 Sunday services (after freezing Saturday night), I connected the computer in the control room (iMac 10.7.5 also) to the switcher via same HDMI inputs and used the frozen computer for the stage display only. I haven't tried to do anything else after the freeze like play a DVD. The countdown clock freezes with the output, but in PP in continues to run. The mouse still works, we can advance slides within PP and the stage monitor continues to work. When it "freezes", only the preview window in PP and the output to the switcher freezes (thus the title of the post). So if the splitter continues to work, I'll go that route and see. They think it's the HDMI, but won't commit to that being the fix. I've asked the PP techs if converting to SDI and inputting via BCN would solve the problem, and as usual they say try it and see. Sometimes we play 3-5 minutes of a DVD on Friday night, no reported problems there. It's very fast and does not have a lot of useless junk stored on it. It runs a total of 12 -15 hours a week at most for the past 4-5 years. We have no editing software, etc on this computer, we use it to run PP on Friday, Saturday and Sunday services, band practice on Wednesday, maybe a funeral or 2 per month. We don't use this computer for much more than some minor word processing to import the sermon scriptures into PP.

I appreciate your time and input on this.

You're all up to date when you run Apple's software update? (besides updating to Yoesmite)

If it does, something might be wrong with the graphics card.Ĭan you output any other way into the switcher from the iMac besides HDMI? When it freezes up do you mean it hard locks? You can't hit cmd - option - esc and force quit it? That makes me think it's some type of driver issue or possibly something with the graphics card itself.

No song lyrics or anything.įreezing doesn't happen in any other programs? Say if you run a movie or something does it lock up? Might be worth testing. Never had problems with freezing and I throw all types of stuff at it, but it's mainly for video playback of clips. Updated every version since then and using it on Yosemite now with a 1 M/E (non 4k) switcher.

I run the latest PP on my Macbook Pro all the time and I think I started it using it on OSX Lion. I guess, but what you're describing isn't exactly stable so you might as well take the chance to fiddle with stuff.
